Automated Clean-up of PFAS with Minimized Blank Values

A well-known challenge in the analysis of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) is the high blank values and thus incorrect results. Coming from the material used in clean-up and measurement systems, since fluorine-containing plastics often built-in can release PFAS.

LCTech has developed a robotic system especially for PFAS applications by avoiding fluorine-containing plastics such as PTFE and is thus solving the challenge. No blank values from the system were measurable.

The FREESTYLE-PFAS system is available for 2 FREESTYLE configurations:

  • FREESTYLE BASIC system with SPE and XANA-module for high-throughput water analysis
  • FREESTYLE BASIC system with SPE-module
     

Automated determination of PFAS in 0.1 – 10 L water samples

With FREESTYLE PFAS, the automated clean-up of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances from up to 24 water samples of 0.1 to 10 litres is possible fast and unattended, even at weekends and overnight.

By parallelizing the individual processing steps „conditioning“, „loading“, „washing“ and the simultaneous processing of 3 samples each, a high sample throughput per day is achieved.

Automated determination of PFAS in up to 100 mL samples via SPE

Besides large-volume water samples, the PFAS system is also available for samples from solid phase extraction with smaller volumes of up to 100 mL (without XANA module): FREESTYLE SPE-PFAS

The SPE module can be used for all solid phase extraction methods. By applying a controlled pressure of up to 4 bar, even viscous samples or samples containing non-solid suspended matter can be pressed through the SPE column.

Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances

PFAS can be found in a variety of our everyday objects and materials. Among other things, they are used for grease and water-repellent surfaces in the textile and paper industry, but also for cleaning agents, lacquers, waxes and paints. PFAS find a very special area of application in fire-fighting foams due to their thermal stability. 

They are released into the environment during the manufacturing process, but also during use or disposal. Therefore, PFAS can be detected worldwide in the environment, in wildlife or in human tissue and blood. Even in the polar regions the substances are already detected.

PFAS are anthropogenic and are characterised by extreme persistence. It is not yet entirely clear what effects PFAS have on the human body or what concentration must be achieved to reach any affect.
