The method is part of the official collection of analytical methods following § 64 LFGB concering the analysis of cosmetics. It is used for the detection and quantitive determination of free formaldehyde.
The main feature of the method is the post-column dervatization of the formaldehyde with penta-2,4-dione to a lutidine derivat. This can be detected with UV at 420 nm or fluorescence at 445/505nm, as described in the method.
