Analysis of Vitamins
Vitamins are of basic importance for human health and well-being. They influence the maintainance of many functions in the organism, the synthesis of cells, blood cells, bones and teeth as well as the immune system. The lack of vitamins can result in serious diseases.
The name "vitamins" goes back to the early 20th century and the assumption that all these compounds contain amine groups - which was disproved afterwards in the run of further chemical analyses. The prefix "vita-" is reference to the fact that they are indispensable to life.
The human body cannot produce vitamins. They thus have to be taken up with nutrition. Nowadays yeasts and bacteria are used for the synthesis of vitamins in industrial scale.
The detection of vitamins is very important. Typical samples are food of herbal and animal origin, dietary and vitamin supplements, cosmetics, medicine, but also vitamin enriched feeds.
